Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important asset in local search. For most local businesses, it produces more calls, direction requests, and website visits than the website itself — because it shows up right inside Google Search and Maps, exactly where ready-to-buy customers are looking. Yet the majority of profiles we audit are running at a fraction of their potential.
This guide walks through the optimization work that actually moves rankings, in the order we apply it in our own process.
1. Claim, Verify, and Lock Down the Basics
Everything starts with a verified profile. If you haven’t claimed your listing, do that first — and if Google asks for video verification, take it slow and follow the prompts carefully, because failed attempts can put your profile into review limbo.
Once verified, nail the fundamentals:
- Business name: your real-world name, exactly as it appears on your signage and documents. Stuffing keywords into the name field violates Google’s guidelines and is the fastest route to a suspension.
- Address and service area: accurate, consistent with your website and citations.
- Phone number: a local number you actually answer.
- Hours: keep them current — including holidays. Profiles with stale hours lose trust signals and clicks.
2. Choose Categories Like Rankings Depend on Them (They Do)
Your primary category is the strongest single lever on the profile. It tells Google which searches you belong in. Pick the most specific category that describes your core money service — “Emergency plumber” beats “Plumber” if emergency calls are your bread and butter.
Then add secondary categories for every real service line, but stop there. Irrelevant categories dilute your relevance and can drag rankings down across the board.
3. Write a Description That Sells and Signals
You get 750 characters. Use the first 250 wisely — that’s what shows before the cutoff. Lead with what you do, who you serve, and where. Weave in the terms customers actually search (your services and city), but write for humans first. No keyword walls.
4. Load the Services and Products Sections
Every service you offer should exist as a named service on the profile, each with its own description. This is free relevance real estate most competitors ignore — and it gives Google explicit text to match against long-tail searches like “tankless water heater installation” instead of just “plumber.”
5. Photos: Fresh, Real, and Geotagged
Profiles with regular photo uploads consistently outperform static ones. Google’s own data shows customers are far more likely to request directions and click through to websites when listings have strong photo sets. Aim for:
- Real job photos (before/after shots are gold for the trades)
- Your team, trucks, and storefront — proof you’re a real local operation
- A steady cadence: a few new photos every month beats fifty photos once
6. Reviews: Volume, Velocity, and Responses
Reviews are a top-three local ranking factor, and they’re also your conversion engine — the difference between 4.2 stars with 12 reviews and 4.9 with 80 is the difference between being skipped and being called. Build a simple system: ask every happy customer at the moment of peak satisfaction, make it one tap with a direct review link, and respond to every review — positive and negative. We’ve covered the full playbook in our guide to earning more Google reviews.
7. Post Weekly
Google Posts keep your profile active and give you extra surface area in the knowledge panel. Offers, project highlights, seasonal reminders — anything genuinely useful. An active profile signals an active business.
8. Keep Your NAP Consistent Everywhere
Your name, address, and phone number should match — character for character — across your website, your GBP, and every directory that mentions you. Inconsistent citations make Google second-guess your data, and second-guessing suppresses rankings. A citation cleanup is one of the first things we do in month one of our process.
9. Track What Matters
GBP’s performance reports show calls, direction requests, website clicks, and the queries that surfaced your profile. Watch those queries: they tell you exactly which categories and services are pulling weight, and where you’re invisible.
The Compounding Effect
None of these levers is magic on its own. Together — applied consistently, month after month — they compound into map pack visibility that’s very hard for competitors to displace. That’s the entire premise behind our managed local SEO plans: the fundamentals, executed manually and relentlessly. And because every market plays by different rules, we run dedicated strategies for Brooklyn, Queens, and every other area we serve.
